This morning, ZTE announced a new smartphone for the US. It’s the Nubia 5S Mini LTE. Now this is news that we are covering because ZTE doesn’t usually make it into the US. Usually their stuff ends up on carriers like Boost Mobile, or Virgin Mobile, which then gets renamed. Like the Boost Max, which is actually the ZTE Iconic Phablet. And to see them bring a device here that is available unlocked is even better.
So what kind of specs are we looking at with the ZTE Nubia 5S Mini LTE? Well we’ve got a 4.7-inch 1280×720 resolution display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor with the Adreno 305 GPU which is clocked at 1.2GHz, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage along with a microSD card slot that gives you an additional 32GB, there’s also the 13MP rear-facing camera and a 5MP front-facing camera. As far as dimensions go, we’ve got 134.8 x 65.8 x 7.6mm, and it’s packing a 2,000mAh battery inside with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean running the show.
It’s actually a decently spec’d device, especially given that it is only $279 unlocked. Now sure you could argue that the Nexus 5 is only about $60 more than the Nubia 5S Mini LTE, but it’s still great to see more and more smartphones coming in as unlocked and at a lower price. I think we’ll start seeing more flagships come in at around $300-400 now as well. While there are plenty of other options out there in this price range, what sets the ZTE Nubia 5S Mini LTE apart is the camera. ZTE calls it a “DSLR-grade” camera. Which we’ll have to test out once we get our hands on one, for sure.
