Coolpad is a telecommunications equipment company from China, it is the 3rd largest smartphone company in China according to Wikipedia. This company has lots of devices under its belt and their products keep on getting better with time. Coolpad Halo is a good example of company’s high-end device with its octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel rear-facing shooter. This company has been focusing mainly on mid-range devices, as most Chinese manufacturers have, though it seems the company is now ready to offer more of a premium devices while keeping affordable prices… and I say it again, like some other Chinese manufacturers.
An interesting Coolpad-made phablet popped up on TENAA (Chinese equivalent of the FCC). Looking at its design, it looks like HTC One and Meizu MX4 had a baby. It sports a similar form factor as the HTC One and that is the first device that I thought of while looking at this thing, though it has that round home key which is quite similar to Meizu MX4 (and its predecessors). The device is listed as Coolpad VC-1 and according to the listing it sports a 5.98-inch QHD (2560 x 1440) display along with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage (expandable via MicroSD card up to 128GB). Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor clocked at 2.5GHz is powering this thing. The website lists support for TD-LTE / LTE FDD / CDMA 2000 / CDMA 1X / GSM and it says the device will run Android 4.4.4 out of the box. Coolpad VC-1 measures 162 x 83.2 x 8.75mm and it weighs 182 grams. It seems like Coolpad is using some sort of metal as material of choice when it comes to the design of this phone. Looking at the back side of the device, you’ll notice that it sports 2 cameras, seemingly identical. This could be used for some sort of a 3D effect or something, though I’m only guessing. Below the cameras you can see a dual LED flash, I believe that’s a dual-tone flash as well considering the 2 sensors seem to sport different colors, though the image is not that sharp so I can’t say for sure.
This phablet certainly looks promising and it could turn out to be Coolpad Grand 5 once it launches. Specifications are top-notch and it looks really good, at least on these renders. The screen size might be a problem for some though, 5.98 isn’t exactly pocketable, but for those who love big phones this could be perfect. Those bezels seem rather thin as well. Hopefully we’ll know more about this device soon.
