We heard last week, that Google was about to launch it’s first Android One device this month, and well we actually have a date for the announcement now. For those that don’t know, or maybe have forgotten, Android One is a new program Google is launching alongside a few manufacturers that are large in India and other third-world countries. It’s basically stock Android, good specs and under $100. Which is a great program, and it’s how Google is going to reach the next billion smartphone users. These devices will also be updated by Google. So in other words, they are even cheaper Nexus/Google Play devices for these specific countries.
So which manufacturers is Google working with? Well at this point it’s just Karbonn, Micromax and Spice. However that may change in the near future. It’ll be interesting to see if this heads to China as well, seeing as Google services are banned from China. Which is why we have a million different app stores for Android apps over there, unfortunately.
September 15th at noon, I’d venture to guess that’s in India’s time-zone, with them being 9 hours ahead of the east coast of the US, that would be about 3am for us. We likely won’t be there but we will be covering this event, and hopefully some new goodies come out of this. This is going to be great for those in India, because devices like the Samsung Galaxy S5 are very expensive over in India. They are about twice as much as they are here in the US. Which is why companies like Karbonn, Micromax and Spice are popular with their cheaper devices.
How many of you are excited to see Android L launch over in India in about two weeks from today? Let us know your thoughts in the comments down below.
