We had heard in the runup to IFA 2014 that Huawei was going to announce a new version of their already-launched Ascend P7 complete with a Sapphire Glass screen, and today they finally announced it at IFA in Berlin, Germany. The Ascend P7 is the company’s flagship device, offering a nice balance between specs, build-quality and of course, price. They announced the P7 back at Mobile World Congress in February and now they’re back with a slightly tweaked version of it.
Onstage in Germany, Richard Yu, the company’s head announced the new device complete with a new Rose Gold trim to it. Other than that, what’s new? Well, not much. Just as we expected, the Sapphire Edition of the Ascend P7 features said Sapphire glass to ensure an even higher level of durability than the original version. We’ve seen Sapphire Glass on a couple of phones already, and the results are pretty surprising, with the screens being virtually indestructible when compared to their Gorilla Glass variants, and while it’s nice to see Huawei offer such a device, it’s a shame that a lot of people that would have already bought an Ascend P7, already have one.
We’re looking at the same quad-core HiSilicon Kirin 910T clocked at 1.8 Ghz, backed with 2GB of RAM and the same 5-inch 1080p panel that launched sometime ago. Still, as a decent-looking 4G smartphone that doesn’t cost the earth, a more resilient version of the Ascend P7 isn’t a bad thing. It’s also got a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera as well an 8-megapixel shooter upfront, so there is of course plenty of imaging prowess to work with. While there’s no word on just how much this is going to cost, we certainly hope Huawei keep it in line with the regular Ascend P7 after all, not much has changed here.
