Kickstarter is a fundraising project website which allows companies, startups and individuals to list their ideas and ask for help raising revenue to usually mass produce or design something. Those who pledge to the cause are normally rewarded by either receiving a discounted version of the finished project or at the very least being one of the first to receive the item.
SALT, is one of the current projects looking for backing on Kickstarter. In short, SALT is a card which when carried around with you alleviates the need to have a pin on your phone. The card is a credit card sized card and uses Bluetooth to connect to your device, telling your phone when you are nearby. Whenever you are within 10ft of your phone, the card connects and automatically unlocks the phone so you no longer need to continuously enter your pin every time you pick the device up. When you move more than 10ft away the SALT card automatically locks your phone again. According to the developers, users spend up to 52 hours per year typing their pin in to their phone (not so sure about this to be honest) and as such claim they can save you these hours while offering security and convenience. The card itself is similar in all respects to a credit card and designed to be carried in your wallet or purse. The card runs on Bluetooth 4.0, works with Android 4.4 (KitKat) via a SALT app and according to the developers has been designed with a one-year battery contained within. So there is no need to charge the card although presumably after one year you will have to buy another one.
Interested? Well, the current fundraising cycle is open until October 12th. According to the developer’s timeline, if all goes well then they hope to ship the finished product to early supporters by the end of December. Although this very well might be later or change if they encounter any further problems or mass-production issues.
