Motorola has recently announced their new Moto G and Moto X smartphones while also introducing them alongside the anticipated Moto 360 smartwatch. All of Motorola’s new products seem set to become big hits for the company, and now the company is selling directly to customers in the UK. Right now however, it seems that the Moto G is the only device that can be purchased right now, with the Moto 360 and Moto X simply asking for your contact details in order to update you further down the line.
Has Motorola started to sell devices directly in the UK following the news that Phones4U is heading into administration? Well, possibly, but I highly doubt that was the deciding factor in opening up their store to UK customers. While Phones4U was a big part of the original Moto G’s success in the UK, and key in getting the Moto X off the ground, we have to think that Motorola had a plan in place to start supplying their phones directly to customers. After all, Motorola is a company that creates many of their own accessories and what better way for UK customers to get their hands on them than from the horse’s mouth? As of right now, it’s just cases for the 2nd generation Moto G that are available directly from Motorola’s store, but hopefully they expand the selection somewhat.
Selling devices directly to customers in the UK seems to be something of a trend emerging in the mobile space, with the likes of Samsung and Sony selling devices directly. The networks have been doing the same as well, and this is what has led Phones4U to fall into administration, and while it does perhaps remove choice from the High Street, it does allow manufacturers to control their advertising and their message entirely themselves, and we’re fairly certain it’s a decent move from a business perspective, too.
