As part of the event in Chicago at Motorola last week. They also showed us how they test out new material on the Moto X that you can add through Moto Maker. Because there’s more than just the polycarbonate back, there’s also the wood backs and the leather backs as well now. Motorola really tests out these new materials before making them available. Motorola also showed us how they can simulate about 20 months of wear and tear in about a weeks’ time. So they are able to test the durability, and such. And they do the same with the new materials that they add to Moto Maker, which we’ll likely see more materials come to Moto Maker soon as well.
With the new Moto X (2014), we’re getting 4 new leather backs and 4 wood backs, in addition to all the colors of the polycarbonate material that we had last year. I actually have a black leather Moto X right now and I really like it. In the pictures shown below, you can see all kinds of tools and such they use to make the backs for these devices, as well as test them out. It’s pretty cool, actually. And this is why we don’t see new materials making their way into Moto Maker weekly, or even monthly. It takes time to go and test out everything. Which is important to do before making it’s available.
The Leather and Wood backs are going to be an additional $25 when they are available later this month with the Moto X. Right now Moto Maker is only available on AT&T and Verizon in the US, Telcel in Mexico, Phones 4U in the UK, Orange in France, and Phone House in Germany. Hopefully we’ll see it move to more carriers and retailers in the near future. But at launch this is where Moto Maker will be available.
