Earlier this year, we saw Samsung release the Gear S, a smartwatch that was capable of being a smartphone on its own and even though the S didn’t quite stand for Standalone as we were all thinking, the Gear S is far less reliant on a smartwatch than other similar devices. Now, it looks like Samsung might not be the only South Korean giant to introduce such a product. Now, there’s word that LG might be closer than ever to releasing a smartwatch with a built-in 3G radio, and that it could even be heading to the US to hit Sprint and Verizon.
Our friends over at GforGames have discovered an FCC entry for a new LG device with the model number VC-100/P which features a CDMA-compliant 3G radio in a device with dimensions of 57.7 x 35.5 mm which lines up fairly neatly with the Gear S’ rather large measurements of 58.3 x 39.8 mm. Add that to the fact that the FCC listing says that the VC100 is to be “restricted to wrist-worn use” and it’s pretty clear we have a smartwatch with 3G on its way. Of course, there’s no telling whether or not the radio will be used in the way we think it’s going to be. After all, LG have decided to stick with Google and the Android Wear platform, which doesn’t quite seem ready to act like a smartphone just yet.
No matter what the 3G radio will be used for though, it seems like LG has a new smartwatch coming to the market, but just what that device is we’re unsure of, but we don’t think this is the recently announced G Watch R, which is pretty much a completed product that will have gone through the FCC long before now. With Android Wear poised for some big updates this Fall with the launch of Android L, we wouldn’t be surprised if some new hardware was to come along for the ride, after all when it comes to watches be them smart or otherwise, more choice is a good thing.
