It’s clear that Samsung has started to see a decline in profits and sales in their mobile division. As much as we hated writing about that type of stuff, it had to be done. And Samsung is looking to nip that in the bud. As they should. According to The Wall Street Journal today, the company is moving around about 500 engineers from their mobile division to other parts of the company. This including its home electronics, networking and software divisions. Samsung has stated that they are moving people around to keep their “competitive edge” and also to leverage resources for Tizen. Which it appears they will be pushing pretty heavily in the next year or two.
We don’t have many details right now, but it’s looking like Samsung is looking to bring in some fresh faces to their mobile division, which is good to do every once in a while. As you’ll get new ideas, new designs, etc. So don’t look at this as “ZOMG Samsung is dying”. No. Samsung isn’t going anywhere. Even if their mobile division does start losing money, their other divisions will help keep them afloat. They sell plenty of TV’s, appliances and even cameras to stay relevant.
We likely won’t see these changes translate into their devices until 2016 or later. As these things do take time. It typically takes about 12-18 months for a smartphone to go from it’s first protoype to the complete thing which you see at a launch event. Then a few more months to get mass production under way. So these things take time, lots of time. But it will be interesting to see what happens with Samsung in the near future.
