Sony To Unveil A Smartphone Accessory Compatible With E-Mount Lenses

A lot of today’s smartphone manufacturers use Sony’s lenses when creating their devices. Every single one of those cameras offer different results due to software which is created by the manufacturers themselves, results can be totally different of course. Sony is about to update its game, at least according to SonyAlphaRumors which usually give precise information, plus there are tons of images included here. Interesting enough we’re not talking about a new camera module, but an accessory.

E-Mount lenses are rather expensive camera lenses which Sony sells for its cameras. It seems like Sony plans to introduce a new accessory in its QX camera accessory lineup which Sony introduced last year in order to make your smartphone compatible with these lenses. Here are some details directly from the source: “These are the first pictures of the ILCE-QX1 E-mount camera. The third QX camera after the QX10 and QX100 (here one Bay). But unlike the other two this hasn’t a fixed lens but is an E-mount module. It has an APS-C sensor (not sure yet but should have the same great A6000 24MP sensor with fast af), built-in flash.”

The QX accessories got mixed reviews last year, mainly due to their price. It cost $300-$500 at launch, though the price did go down in time. Those lenses are compatible with Android and iPhone devices and pack Wi-Fi, battery, memory, NFC and a back illuminated 18MP 1/2.3 Exmor R CMOS sensor. The lenses didn’t exactly sell well due to the price point and the reviews, so it seems Sony plans to change its approach and let users buy an with which they’ll be able to mount the existing lenses on their devices. This actually seems like a smarter approach if you ask me, you’ll be able to mount any E-Mount lense you want, perhaps the one you already use with your camera. That being said, I doubt this will sell as well as Sony hopes it will.

Sony is holding its pre-IFA press event in Berlin tomorrow (September 3rd) and this accessory might make an appearance there. The expected price is 300 euro for the body itself and 450 euro if its accompanied with a 16-50mm lens. So if you’re interested, stay tuned, we’ll find out more shortly.
