Sponsored Game Review: Dark Side

Description: Dark Side is an Android game that aims to pit yourself against well, yourself. The main gameplay aspect of Dark Side is to just tap the darker side of your display. You’ll see the same color in two different shades, one light and one dark, you need to tap the darker side of the display in order to move to the next color. You only get a certain amount of time in between each tap though, so you need to be quick to keep the timer at a steady level in order to post a high score. If you run out of time, by not hitting the dark side quickly enough, then it’s game over.

How it Works: Dark Side needs to be downloaded from the Play Store just like other Android games before you can start playing. You can also take a look at the Dark Side website as well.

Playing the game is really quite simple, all you need to do is hit the darker side of the display, you’ll notice the timer going down in the below shot. You need to keep on tapping the dark sides in order to keep this timer either where it is, or if your reactions are really good, going up.

You’ll add to your score each time you get a successful tap on a dark color, and you’ll also head on up through the levels with things getting harder as you progress. However, you’ll need to keep an eye on that timer, as it can really make things tricky for you.

If you tap the wrong side of the display, or run out of time, then that’s it – game over. You’ll be given a score and the opportunity to play again as well.

Opinion: Dark Side is a great bit of fun and is a really nice way to taste your reflexes out, not to mention the fact that it’s also quite addictive as well. What makes Dark Side so compelling is not the admittedly very simple gameplay, but more the fact that It’s you against yourself, it’s you constantly trying to go one further than you did the last time, and that’s a powerful thing in gaming. It’s why ghost cars are so popular in racing games after all. It is a shame that there isn’t a little more substance to the game, but Dark Side is designed to be nice and simple to keep things sharp and fresh, so we can’t complain too much.

Ratings

  • Speed (4/5) – The game runs well, with no real stutters to see and everything keeps on moving as you would expect it to.
  • Features (4/5) – It’s a simple concept, no denying that, but it’s also compelling and extremely challenging to boot.
  • Theme (4/5) – There really isn’t much of a theme here, but the colors are fairly easy to distinguish from one another and it’s super-simple to figure out what to do.
  • Overall (4/5) – Dark Side is an excellent bit of fun, especially when killing time on the daily commute or relaxing at home. If you’re into games that put you against your last high score, than you’ll love Dark Side.

Pros

  • Easy to pickup and play no matter where you are, on a crowded train or on the couch at home.
  • Good use of reflexes to people who like fast paced gameplay interested.
  • Good for casual gamers who want a challenge without needing to learn a finnicky control scheme.
  • Works well on either smartphones or tablets.

Cons

  • Dark Side isn’t the most original game out there, but it does feel its own game without doubt.
  • Ads can be quite distracting at times.

Conclusion: If you’re looking for a new game that tests how sharp your brain is and asks you to keep on doing better than you did the time before, then Dark Side is that game, it’s a good deal of fun and very addictive. I like the timer part of the game, as this encourages you to keep on going even though you run the risk of hitting the other color when going fast. Conquering that high score you thought you were never going to beat again is a really great feeling and more games should take advantage of that like Dark Side does.
