Techno Source wants to set themselves apart in the packed low-end tablet market with their new Kurio Xtreme Tablet for Kids. The Xtreme Tablet for Kids is a 7-inch device packed full of games, ebooks, and Kurio’s own Motion games system aimed at kids aged 5-12. I let my kids loose on this thing to see how it holds up. Let’s take a closer look at what it has to offer.
Hardware
The Kurio Xtreme Tablet is a low-end tablet when you look at the specs. The tablet has a 7-inch display with a 1024 x 600 screen resolution. It’s running on an Intel Atom Z2520 dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz and has 1GB of RAM. It runs Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box. The rear camera is just 2.1-megapixels, and the front camera is 0.3-megapixels. It supports Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and come with 16GB of internal storage space. It does have a microSD slot to expand the storage up to 32GB more. It also comes with a rubberized case that will protect the tablet against bumps and drops. This is really important when you’re talking about a tablet for kids. The Kurio Xtreme tablet isn’t going to blow you away with specs, but that’s not what it’s about.
I’m not going to focus on the performance, camera, or other areas we typically look at in our reviews. This is a tablet for your kids. It has lots of options that can help you control it, and it’s loaded with games and other things for them to do. This tablet is about getting your kids moving.
Games
The signature feature on the Kurio Xtreme tablet is its Motion games. This is a library of games and apps that use the device’s camera to get them interacting with the game. They will have to run, swim, jump, play goalie in a soccer game in these special games. The games work using just the built-in front-facing camera; no other peripherals needed. There’s a plastic triangular stand included that you can stand the tablet in when you’re playing these games. The stand is great for watching movies or Netflix, too. My kids are three so I had to guide them through playing the Motion games. We had fun and let me tell you they left me out of breath. It was fun.
The Kurio Xtreme also comes loaded up with a ton of popular games like Angry Birds Space, Fruit Ninja, and Cut the Rope. These are full versions of the games, not demo versions. There are some demo versions of games, too, but this tablet is loaded up with games. There are premium apps with Disney and Marvel characters like Avengers Origins: Assemble and Cars 2 Read & Race. Educational apps and e-books are in abundance as well, and even coloring apps. The tablet has full access to the Google Play Store, so you can download Netflix and YouTube if you want them to have access to those apps, too.
Parental Controls
Even though the tablet can access any app in the Play Store, you as the parent have to install it and give your child access to it. The Kurio Xtreme gives you full control over what your kid can do. There is a password-protected Parent profile and an easily accessible kid’s profile. Your kids can safely access email and the web through special filters that should block out the stuff you don’t want them to see. You can create up to eight profiles, each with their own levels of access and passwords. Your kids can set their own wallpapers and personalize their profiles. You have control over what they can access.
Techno Source has gone out of their way to make this tablet really parent-friendly. There’s a 24/7 Customer Care center that you can access right from the tablet. The Kurio has dedicated Support and SOS apps, you can chat live with a tech support agent, and they can even take control of the tablet remotely to help you if you need it.
Wrap-up
The Kurio Xtreme Tablet for Kids is a really smart implementation of a tablet for children. It’s well thought out and easy to use. My three-year olds were able to navigate the custom UI without my help on the first try. It’s not a Nexus 7 or a high-end Samsung tablet, but it doesn’t have to be. There were a couple times when the tablet actually lagged and apps hung up a bit. My kids didn’t mind though. I don’t think yours will either.
