As one of the core Google services that arguably makes Google as popular as it is, GMail is also a major draw for Android users. Having said that, the GMail app on Android has mostly stayed the same for quite some time now, and while there’s nothing wrong with that, it would be nice to see a true update hit one of Android’s core applications. As Android 5.0 Lollipop is about to rollout to Nexus devices everywhere, Google has steadily been updating their core apps to take on Material Design and offer a similar experience to that of the new version of Android. Already we’ve seen Google+, the Play Store as well as some of its associated apps get the Material Makeover and it appears that GMail is next.
Android Police have gotten their hands on the next version of of GMail, which is curiously version 5.0, and while they’re not comfortable with sharing the APK until it’s been officially released by Google, they’ve shared the video that will introduce users to the new version of GMail. Following in the footsteps of the Google+ app that got its Material Makeover before anything else, the compose button is now always featured towards the bottom-right of the UI to make it quicker than ever to compose a new message. Other than that, it seems that GMail will get a similar makeover just like other Google Apps, but there is one new feature that will please those with multiple accounts; the ability to manage them all from GMail 5.0.
While we can already send email as other address from GMail as well as have our mail forwarded, it’s not quite the same as managing a different inbox from a different mail provider. For whatever reason, it’s not uncommon for people to have at least two different email addresses and sometimes more. Sure, Google’s method of bringing all your accounts into one GMail account is nice, but it can get a little messy. With the new version of GMail it looks like Google is okay with people managing their inboxes individually, something that will be sure to please those who use more than one email address regularly.
