Everyone knows Groupon. The online coupon site which figured out if they secure discounts from businesses for driving groups of people to the business they could in turn offer the discounts to the people. Groups and coupons, hence Groupons. Clever huh! Well, back in June of this year Groupon purchased SnapSaves (a Canada savings site) although the acquisition when rather unnoticed. However, now it’s clear why Groupon made this purchase as they have just launched Snap (which in reality is the same as the previous SnapSaves although with the new shorter name).
So what is Snap? Basically, Groupon was pre-occupied with offering deals upfront where users claim and only pay the deal price. In contrast Snap will in effect work as a coupon reimbursing site with every week a number of select coupon items available. To give you an example this week’s offers include a gallon of milk and Huggies Diapers among many others. The clever bit is that you can purchase the listed items from any store and then simply take a picture of the item and the receipt, upload the two and get the coupon-value sent to you. In this week’s example that’s $1 for the milk and $3 for the diapers. Once your account reaches the £20 mark, Groupon…I mean Snap sends you a cheque and that’s how it works in a nutshell. As to be expected there is an app as well as the site and either can be used to upload the images and the receipt, in addition to checking your credit balance and so forth. If you are already a customer of SnapSaves then don’t worry your credentials are still valid and your service will continue as before although under the new Snap branding.
Whether or not users take to this new platform in the same way they have with Groupon is not known. In reality this is rebate program and does require users to pay up-front which is the opposite to Groupon’s more typical at the point-of-sale format. Either way, this is another method to get some cash back in your pocket for buying products you are probably going to be buying anyway. In that sense it cannot be too bad and maybe worth trying.
