Verizon launched the Motorola Droid Turbo device this week and one if its claims-to-fame is that it is able to receive a charge of up to 8 hours after a flash 15 minute charge. This was due to the ‘Turbo Charge’ technology inside. However, this was not the first time we have heard about such quick charging. When the HTC One M8 was unleashed we were also introduced to Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2 technology which similarly (albeit not as quickly), is able to restore a device’s battery in a short time. In fact, according to Qualcomm it has the ability to charge devices 75% quicker. However, the device being Quick Charge compliant is only one side of the equation. To really benefit from this technology the source (the charger) also needs to be able to deliver the power.
Well, right on queue with Motorola launching their Turbo charging Droid Turbo, it seems HTC are gearing up to release a universal Quick charge adapter of their own. By the wording ‘universal’ you might assume this to mean it will work with all devices. Unfortunately, that is not the case and in fact according to the HTC listing, it is quite limited with only a handful of devices listed as compatible. Making the grade is the HTC One M8, HTC One E8, HTC One Remix, HTC Desire Eye and the HTC One M8 Harman Kardon Edition. It’s also worth noting that although Qualcomm claims an up to 75% charge improvement the HTC listing only suggests up to 40% quicker than standard chargers.
If you are already licking your lips in anticipation of picking up this new HTC charger (it’s called the HTC Rapid Charger 2.0 by the way) then settle down again. Although the charger has made it onto the HTC website with its very own listing page, that’s as far as it has got. There currently is no price listed and certainly no indication of when the charger will be available to ship. According to HTCSource, an inside source has advised them that the first US destined batch of chargers are still on-route from Taiwan.
