To root or not to root? That is the question. Well, to be honest it is not even a question if you are, like me, a habitual rooter. I can’t seem to last more than a week with a new device before trying to root it. That is if the tools are available for the device I have. You see, a fundamental tool needed to maximise the benefits of rooting are custom recoveries. These recoveries allow for a much easier rooting lifestyle with quick access to flashing zips and not to mention the fundamentally needed nandroid backups. Most will know that the two biggie custom recoveries are TeamWin Recovery Project (TWRP) and ClockworkMod (CWM). Both are equally as good although they do vary slightly in their presentation and feel.
We reported yesterday that the Moto X 2014 edition has finally got the TWRP treatment and as such those rocking the Moto X could now install the custom recovery and do all kinds of naughty things to their device. Now it’s another day and we can report that another device has been added to the TWRP ever-growing compatibility list. Yes, owners of the Huawei Ascend Mate 2 can now jump on the rooting train and install TWRP on their devices. Similar to the Moto X the version of TWRP available to Mate 2 owners is Version 2.8 which is the most up-to-date version available. If you are an Ascend Mate 2 owner and want to install TWRP then click here to head over to the official TWRP Mate 2 page. However, if you are new to this sort of thing then you do need to realise that installing a custom recovery normally voids the ability to receive OTA updates in the future. Of course, one of the points of installing a custom recovery is to flash ROMs and as such this is not a huge issue but you still should be aware of it. You should also note that before you can install TWRP you do need to make sure your bootloader is unlocked.
Don’t own the Ascend Mate 2? Want to know what it offers? Well it’s actually a rather decent (albeit big) device rocking a 6.1″ display with a 720 x 1280 (241ppi) resolution. Inside you get 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage and it’s powered by a Qualcomm MSM8928 Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor. Additional features include a 13MP rear camera, 5MP wide angle front shooter and a massive 3,900mAh battery. Do you own Huawei’s flagship device? Are you likely to install TWRP and join the flashing community? If not then why not? Worried about not getting OTA updates including Lollipop?
