LG Electronics is a huge corporation, Korea’s second largest smartphone manufacturer and we all know that company actually makes tons of other appliances, like TVs, microwaves, smartphone display, etc. Much like Samsung, LG really likes to dabble in everything and it seems they’re going to push things a bit further soon. LG smartphones have been powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips, at least most of them, but it seems like LG is ready to start using company’s very own Odin AP SoC (System on a Chip). According to CNET’s sources, LG will launch an Odin-powered smartphone as early as this week. This handset will allegedly carry the “G3” name, probably a submodel of some kind. It is still unknown whether LG will launch it globally or only in Korea. It’s going to be interesting to see how will this Odin SoC compare to the likes of Snapdragon, Exynos and even MediaTek chips. This chip has been rumored for a long time and it seems like LG is finally ready to implement it in one of company’s handsets. It will be based on ARM Cortex-A15 architecture and it will support 1080p full HD resolution with the ARM big.LITTLE processor configuration.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips are basically number 1 in the market at the moment. MediaTek is on the rise, especially in low and mid-range devices though some manufacturers have been using MediaTek chips in high-end devices too. This Chinese SoC manufacturer is doing great lately and it will be interesting to see how will they fare in 2015. Samsung’s Exynos chips are used mainly by Samsung itself even though the company is trying to sell them to other manufacturers and Intel and NVIDIA are trying to find their way onto the market, though they’re not exactly doing as well as they would like. 2015 is going to be an interesting year when it comes to SoCs, we have more and more players in this game and they’ll want to put pressure on Qualcomm for sure, the only question is will they succeed.
