Back in mid-September we starting seeing leaked images of Samsung’s new selfie-intended smartphone, the Galaxy Grand Prime. Since then all of the attention on this device has focused around the device offering a 5MP front camera for better quality selfies. Then a couple of days ago it was reported the device was due to be released in India within the coming days. Well, the time has come and so has the Galaxy Grand Prime as the device has now been officially released in India.
So what is it offering? The Grand Prime comes with a 5″ 5-inch qHD display offering a resolution of 960 x 540p. Inside the device offers 1GB RAM and a 1.2GHz quad-core processor. In terms of memory the device comes with 8GB internal storage plus the obligatory microSD card slot (up to 64GB). The device is powered by a 2,600 mAH battery, offers Bluetooth 4.0, 3G connectivity and an 8MP rear camera. Now about this business of the front camera. As mentioned it was highly rumored that this device was selfie-orientated and as such was coming with a 5MP camera. This has now been confirmed. The prime does indeed come with a 5MP front facing camera and in addition is equipped with an 85 degree wide lens to increase the visual capabilities of the front facing camera. With this in mind, Samsung are not actually referring to this as a ‘selfie’ camera but instead a ‘Groupfie’ camera due to its design intended to take better group-situation images.
Currently, the device is being released in India (although it is reported is also on sale in Vietnam). The Grand Prime will be available in two colors (white or grey), will run on Android 4.4 (KitKat) and will cost locally Rs 15,499, which is roughly $250. So there you go. The Grand Prime is ousted and not quite as the selfie-focused camera we expected, but instead a device aimed at group images and Groupfies. It will be interesting to see how the Prime sells in India at the price stated, especially considering the Xiaomi Mi3 is due to be re-released in India very soon. To put it into perspective the Mi3 will be at a similar price-point but sporting higher specs like a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2 GB RAM, a 5″ 1080p display and a 13 MP rear camera. What do you think? Are you interested in a Groupfie/Selfie camera at this price? Is a better front camera worth sacrificing other specs like the RAM or rear camera? Would you choose the Grand Prime over the Mi3? Let us know what you think
