When we purchase a new device, especially a smartphone, from a premium manufacturer like Samsung, HTC, LG or Sony, we expect to get timely Android updates. Granted, MOST of us don’t get too excited if they are a little late between 4.4.2 and 4.4.3, but when it comes to a major jump like 4.4.4 KitKat to 5.0 Lollipop, we want the update as soon as possible – especially when the new 5.0 Lollipop is coming out days after you get your brand ‘new’ device. We often feel cheated that we are not getting the latest and greatest in software. Samsung was not the best in getting their updates done on a timely manner, heck we could barely get a timetable or commitment from them. Thankfully, competition has changed all of that and Samsung owners are now getting a timetable so we can see what devices are scheduled for updates and when to expect them…so far they have been pretty accurate.
We all knew that the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (and Edge and Galaxy S5) would get their upgrade to 5.0 Lollipop and that it would be the first to do so – but hints are coming out that it may be sooner rather than later. Samsung has tweeted images of the Galaxy Note 4 with images of Lollipops on the display, and this is generally the ‘subtle’ way that Samsung hints of things to come. It may be there just to show the excitement of Lollipop’s announcement, but it may mean much more.
Our source had an exclusive where they revealed that Samsung was aiming for a late November or early December timetable and that Samsung is already testing 5.0 Lollipop on the Galaxy S5…so this may mean that they are shooting for something earlier – or that they will be ready to hit that date before the holiday’s shopping frenzy. It also makes perfect sense that Samsung would want to nail this upgrade as soon as possible, especially on the Galaxy Note 4 – after all, the Nexus 6 is fast approaching…a 6-inch monster with Android 5.0 Lollipop already installed. Samsung doesn’t want 5.0 Lollipop to be a deciding factor over a Galaxy Note 4 purchase versus a Nexus 6 purchase.
