The Sony Xperia line of devices are interesting to many. One thing that unites them is the similar, and sometimes identical, build and design of the many devices in Sony’s brand. The other is that they all get software updates terribly slow, from Sony that is. So, just as with some Samsung devices and some HTC phones, it’s great news to see official updates working their way onto the Internet of things. Today, we have great news for Sony Xperia Z2 owners.
Sony has let something slip out of one of their devices, and it’s official Android 4.4.4, Kit Kat firmware for the Xperia Z2. For owners, this is great news, because Xperia devices seem to get more or less neglected after an upgrade and next iteration of the line is introduced to the market. There is a gallery of all the screenshots of the new firmware, with the text in simplified Chinese. Let’s see what the Z2 owners get as a reward for waiting so long for the ‘latest Android version’.
First and foremost, the Xperia Z2 will get an upgraded aesthetic that will match the Xperia Z3, and it will also be graced with the same home launcher as the Z3. In the power menu, we see the option to start a screen recording, to take a screenshot, as well as to reboot, so that’s nice and new. The addition of Sony’s Ultra STAMINA mode is also found in the screenshots, so the Z2 will now be able to last, with more limited usability, much longer thanks to this coming update. We also see the option to pair a Dualshock 4 PlayStation controller to the devices, if you are one of those folks that loves Sony products that much (or just happen to have a controller around the house).
The build of the firmware is slightly older than the recently certified version, so that’s odd. But the good news is that Sony does still care, though how much is not evident, about their Xperia Z2 customers. No official announcement has been issued, and no date has been set, obviously. The EXR (Extraordinary Xperia Romer) Group has let us know about this leaked firmware, and also provided a download on the source page (so go check that out if you have an Xperia Z2).
