Description: Despite the name, Typesetter certainly isn’t one more Android app to bring a typewriter-like experience to your smartphone or tablet, rather it’s a way of bringing beautiful typography and photography together. Just like the below image suggests, Typesetter is an app that helps your photos express the message that you wanted to with your images, through clean, funky typography. With lots of different font choices and color options, you’ll find a look that either compliments or contrasts with your photos, allowing you to speak directly to your viewer without ruining the beautiful photograph. There’s something to be admired with Typesetter, and if you want to know whether or not I liked it, you’ll have to read on.
How it Works: You’ll first need to download Typesetter from the Play Store, while it is a paid app there’s no ads to deal with which is really refreshing.
You can either take a photo or choose a photo, if your photo is a 16:9 you’ll be asked to crop it to 4:3.
From there, you can go ahead and get started with inputting whatever you text you want, including the ability to align things left, right or center them. Of course, the real fun is in choosing from one of those really nice fonts included with the app.
You can change the color of your fonts as well as control the amount of blur applied to the background photo, too.
You can also apply some interesting frames to your final picture.
Here’s a look at my final product for this first image:
I had some more fun with this, sending messages to my friends to see if they’d find them as funny as I did.
There are more fonts available as well, but sadly there’s a further cost associated for these as well.
Opinion: I’m a keen photographer in my spare time, but it’s become more of a sort of closet hobby as I’ve gotten a little older. Still, I still take a lot of photos and the ones I really care about I’ll share with people. With Typesetter, I can have a little more fun with my photos and add that witty or funny caption into the photo itself, allowing me to send fun snaps to family and friends. For those looking to get a little more artsy with their photos, Typesetter has all sorts of different fonts available and a lot of them are really good-looking on their own. I do wish that there were some sort of way to change the angle of the text in photos, but we can’t have everything can we.
Ratings
- Speed (4/5) – There’s no need to wait around with Typesetter, the app is solid and snappy.
- Features (4/5) – It’s clearly designed to a high level of polish, but it would be nice to see some more options to change where the text appears in the photo.
- Theme (4/5) – No doubt about it, the typefaces on offer here are all very good-looking, and the whole app helps you make the most out of your favorite photos.
- Overall (4/5) – A solid app that has a neat concept at its heart, Typesetter is a lot of fun and the flexibility is endless, giving you the tools to create something unique out of your own photos.
Pros
- Looks good and has wide variety of different typefaces that all look good.
- Nice and easy to use, with just a few steps to produce something that looks unique and fun.
- Great for creating images to send family and friends, as well as creating your own wallpapers for your device.
- Customization options are all easy to figure out what they do and how they work.
Cons
- Extra typefaces need to be purchased, despite the price of the app in the first place.
- No way to change angle of text in the photograph.
Conclusion: Typesetter works really well to fulfill its main aim, which is get to typography into your photography. However, there needs to be a few more customization options available, like the ability to change the angle of the text in your photo and I don’t like having to pay for any more fonts after paying upfront for the app. However, developers need to make some money somehow and the app is a well-polished app that photographers everywhere should really take to, especially if they have an eye for great-looking typography as well.
