Last year, Tesco surprised pretty much everyone by releasing their own Android tablet. Not that it was surprising for yet another player joined the budget tablet game, but more so because Supermarkets aren’t know for their tech endeavors. Of course, the Hudl was surprising itself, with a quality 7-inch display that had a decent resolution of 1440 x 900 as well as a quad-core CPU and 1GB of RAM, it was easily the best value tablet out there, and it ran stock Android – Google’s Android at that! So, what do you do when you’ve made something affordable that became quite successful? Well, you make a better one of course, and here we are with the Hudl2, a larger, more powerful successor to the Supermarket’s first tablet.
The Hudl2 is poised to keep up with the growing trend of smaller tablets getting bigger, and comes in at 8.3-inches with a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1200, and under the hood things have changed a bit. Instead of a MediaTek CPU, Tesco have teamed up with Intel and the Hudl2 now uses a quad-core Atom CPU with 2GB of RAM to back it up. There’s an expandable 16GB of storage here as well, with a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.2-megapixel camera around the front.
There’s going to be 8 different colors when it launches and a further array of 64 possible color combinations through official cases and such. While this doesn’t seem like a big deal, there’s a reason why a lot of people liked the Moto X; you could make it your own. It’s pretty safe to say that people are probably fed up of either a white or a black tablet, and so Tesco is giving them choices, which is nice. Just like the original Hudl, there’s going to be an array of different accessories available for it as well.
On the software side of things, Tesco has kept the Hudl2 meddle-free and there’s stock Android 4.4 KitKat running here with some light modification. That includes some child-safety measures as Tesco were seeing that people were buying the Hudl for their little ones, which is not surprising given the £119 price tag. Speaking of price, this year’s Hudl2 is going to cost £129, which is remarkably affordable and couple that with the fact you can magically turn each £5 lot of Clubcard vouchers into £10 when purchasing a Hudl2, Tesco’s tablet becomes an even more affordable proposition. With a Full HD display, a fairly snappy CPU and stock Android with full access to the Google Play Store, the Hudl2 could sell like hotcakes this Christmas.
