Samsung – that very name can bring about a multitude of reactions…you either love it or hate it, as there are very few that are neutral towards them. They have been maligned for using plastic…even though other phones use it, like the LG G3, but that’s okay. Others bash their Super AMOLED displays for being far too “cartoonish,” in their bright saturation of colors…even though that has been corrected in the past couple of years with software adjustments and even voted the “best display [DisplayMate] has ever tested,” and they test for true coloring…but that still isn’t good enough. Samsung just came out with the new Galaxy Note Edge, with a display that curves down on one side to give the user an extra mini display…but they are not innovative enough. You know the old saying from John Lydgate – “You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time,” really applies to Samsung and its critics.
However, there is ONE thing that ALL of the people will agree – TouchWiz needs updated and with less bloatware. It has taken Samsung years to finally add a genuine metal frame and trim to its devices, so I guess we will have to wait a little longer to see much of a change in TouchWiz…although they have made minor changes in the past couple of devices, but nothing that will really make a difference in performance or bloat. That may change if a recently filed patent in Korea has anything to do with the TouchWiz interface and Samsung is calling it their Iconic UX – please peruse the gallery below to get a flavor of the new design.
From the looks of the drawings, much of this has to do with multitasking, as Samsung still has the best multitasking setup of any manufacturer. It appears that this new UI will allow you to put more Apps on the screen at one time and possibly exchange data between the two – one sample screen shows the Date & Time at the top, under it an opened Gallery, then an opened Web Clip, a Music section and five icons across the bottom of the screen.
The Iconic UX is only in the patent stages right now – entitled, ‘Device and method for displaying execution results of application.’ Further research by our source indicates that the Director of Samsung’s UX Lab R&D Center is involved and they deal with the Iconic UX design. We also have to ask ourselves if this is part of their new TouchWiz or could this have something to do with Samsung’s own Tizen OS. You cannot really tell from the patent filing, but it is nice to see that they are indeed working on user interfaces and hopefully we will see the results of that labor soon.
