Android Headliner: Why Motorola May Be Down But Not Out

When it comes to smartphone OEM’s there are a few that always come to people’s minds. Samsung and Apple are of course the two front runners, even though they’re marketshare and sales are waning. Other manufacturers like LG are picking up plenty of users due to their last couple of high end flagships, which are arguably some of the better smartphones out there. HTC has been putting out some really decent products but nonetheless they still have trouble gaining marketshare. Sony is somewhat in the same boat, although if Sony could just market a little better and get their phones into more hands they could be a top OEM. Motorola is one of those brands that has been losing marketshare over the last couple of years, and some think that the sale to Lenovo may have put the nail in the coffin. On the contrary though, even though they have been struggling a little they have been making some really solid handsets, and as of this year they might have just dished out  a winning hand.

Recently, Motorola announced four new phones that for lack of a better way to put it, are astounding. The Moto X and Moto G 2nd Gen are both wonderful successors to last year’s models, and have much to offer those who enjoyed the original Moto X and Moto G, even new users who have never touched the 2013 versions. They have also announced and are soon to release(alongside Google)the Google Nexus 6, as well as the new Motorola DROID Turbo that has launched just days ago on Verizon Wireless. If it weren’t for those last two, Motorola might have had a harder time keeping up with other top tier OEMs that are all fighting for the same customers. With the Google Nexus 6 and the DROID Turbo however, they have a really awesome winning lineup of devices that can prove to deliver some really great experiences.

Both the Droid Turbo and the Nexus 6 offer awesome specifications, things that people who are looking for the highest quality user experiences will be able to find. The Nexus 6 is the first Nexus device to truly offer some amazing high end specs that are on paper, just as good as what one could find inside of devices like the Galaxy Note 4 and the LG G3. It features a Snapdragon 805 CPU and a Quad-HD AMOLED screen. So you have supreme power driven performance and a screen that can put out some amazing color likenesses as well as a really sharp picture. Two things that consumers looking at high end devices will no doubt be looking at when they go to buy a new phone. It also features a 13MP rear facing auto-focus OIS camera with LED flash, and although we haven’t been able to take any pictures just yet to see how it really stacks up against the competition, it should be able to put out some amazing pictures as it’s modeled after the Moto X 2nd Gen. which takes great photos. It’s also running an Adreno 420 GPU, and carries a large 6-inch display so multi-tasking and gaming should be a breeze.

Nexus devices generally tend to be very well known, just for the sheer fact that they come from Google, and this should help Motorola get back into the limelight. Enter the DROID Turbo, which although it won’t feature the stock and most up to date version of Android with Android 5.0 Lollipop like the Nexus 6, it is slated to get the upgrade and more than likely it will be a lot sooner than we think. Past that, the DROID Turbo is a screaming powerful beast with plenty of desirable features that more than deserve the attention of consumers looking at high end devices. It features a 21MP auto-focus camera with dual-LED flash, and is capable of 4K video recording. From our own Alex Maxham’s experiences with the DROID Turbo this past week, it takes some truly amazing pictures. I’d even wager to say some of the best of any current smartphone. It also features a Snapdragon 805 CPU clocked at 2.7GHz, and has things like Turbo Charging so you can get up to 8 hours of battery life off of just a 15 minute charge, which is all in a 3900 mAh battery. There are a slew of other amazing features as well, which should be able to garner plenty of attention from buyers.

With smartphones like these on the market, it shows that Motorola is serious about competing. They want to give customers amazing user experiences with their smartphones and they have certainly showed that they can deliver on the hardware and the software front. Let’s not also forget the devices that they have aimed at the emerging markets, where they are actually booming as an OEM. Time will tell if these phones help to boost their sales, but they’re certainly not down for the count and are aiming high with a lineup of devices that can compete with the best of them, from high end flagships to great starters that still offer some of the best hardware and software combinations that can be bought for a low cost.
