With Android 5.0 Lollipop finally getting dumped into the Android Open Source Project, the release of the factory images and the OTA updates is due to be just days away, and while this is all happening Google is hard at work getting their apps updated with the Material Design UI style interfaces we’ll be seeing laden through Android 5.0. The latest seems to be Google Calendar, which has just started rolling out today and has gotten the complete materialistic(in a good way) refresh. The downside for most of us is that the update only begun rolling out today for those devices that are running Android 5.0 lollipop. Which is really only a handful of devices. Specifically just the Nexus 9, and the Nexus 6. Not too many people likely have those at this point, luckily it’s only supposed to be a few weeks or so before everyone else who is running Android 4.4.4 and below get the same update push.
You already know that the latest version of Google Calendar will come with the Material Design look and style, but it brings along other useful things too. Events from Gmail are now auto-populated into your calendar for the given day of the event, so whenever you book something or have something that’s scheduled that you get an email notification for, you will no longer have to input the data into your calendar manually. The new version of Google Calendar will handle this all for you. Neat huh?
The Calendar app is also getting a Schedule view, which for people that travel more often, or just like to frequent going out on the town while going out of town to do so, will be a nice little enhancement bringing in things like photos and maps of the places you’re going as well as cityscapes and travel destinations. This truly lives up to the visual appeal we can expect from Material Design. The idea here isn’t just to provide a more appealing look, but also in a way attempt at giving users the ability to view things at a quick glance without having to “decipher tiny text to figure out what’s going on.” The next version of Google Calendar is also getting assists, so when users start entering any sort of event information into their calendar, assist can help users by making relevant suggestions for places to visit, eat, have drinks and so on. Everything will look much cleaner, but there is a fair bit of new and useful functionality too. We’ve added in some screens and a video of what to expect when the update drops, give them a look.
