As I type, the Google Nexus 6 is still showing “coming soon,” in fact it’ll be available to pre-order later today and will be launched on the 1 December. That gives us a couple of weeks to wait for the device, whilst we British look across and see the rest of the world using one! Sure that’s an exaggeration but it’s how it feels! I’ll recap about the Nexus 6: it’s Google’s latest and largest Nexus smartphone, packing a 6.0-inch AMOLED screen that’s QHD superhigh resolution, 2,560 by 1,440 pixels. It has one of the most powerful mobile 32-bit processors used in a smartphone, the 2.7 GHz, quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805, backed up by 3 GB of RAM. There’s a choice of 32 GB or 64 GB on-board storage, but no MicroSD slot. The battery is a sealed 3,220 mAh unit and the Nexus 6 supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 for a high speed recharging (under two hours, brim to brim, using the supplied Motorola Turbo charger) plus the wireless Qi charger standard, too. There’s the usual array of radios including high speed WiFi, 4G LTE and Motorola’s intelligent antenna management system to give the Nexus 6 great signal reception. And finally on the hardware front, there’s an optically stabilized 13 MP rear camera complete with dual flash around the back.
That’s a lot of hardware and now it’s time to write about the price, because Google have gone back to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus pricing model with the Nexus 6. On Google Play, the 32 GB version will cost £500 and the 64 GB version is another £50 at £550. History has told me something about Nexus handset launches on the Google Play website: don’t count on getting one! So if you’re looking for a new Nexus 6 you might be waiting at the keyboard or refresh key for a new device but there is an alternative, and if you want the 32 GB version you’ll save a little money too. Online retailer MobiCity have started offering the Nexus 6 in both colors, black and white, for £497.99 as a 32 GB version and £599.99 as a 64 GB version. That’s a £50 hike on Google’s price for the bigger model, but a coffee cheaper for the smaller one. MobiCity don’t confirm (or deny!) that they will have stock for Monday, 1 December but if it’s on offer, we’d hope that it’ll be in stock.
Regardless of where you source your new Nexus 6 from in the UK, it’s still overpriced compared with the unlocked price in America. You see, the 32 GB model is $649 in North America and the 64 GB model $699. According to Google, this equates to £415 and £447 respectively, so there’s a massive margin being made somewhere along the lines.
