Everybody, me included, demand faster specs every year. We want higher resolutions displays even though our eyes cannot tell the difference, we want more RAM in our devices even though much of it sits there idle and is never used and we want our mobile processors to be eight-cores. We want more internal storage for our devices because once we snap a picture, take a video or download a song, it stays on that device forever…or until we get rid of it. One thing that we really demand is lightning fast speed for downloading and uploading our data – we want speed and lots of it…I cannot stand to wait even for 3G any longer, 4G LTE has spoiled me. Qualcomm, along with testing from Ericsson, have announced that with a fifth generation LTE multimode modem that they were able to achieve download speeds of 450 Mbps and next generation envelope tracker for optimized power consumption.
Qualcomm has pretty much been mum on exactly which Snapdragon chipset may see this new 450 Mbps – only that it will be in their future chipsets…which could mean next year or a few years down the road. The company is currently sampling with customers, which means it could very well be ready to use in 2015. Right now, the LTE speed means nothing, as no carriers’ network could come close to the speeds Qualcomm is talking about…they cannot even deliver the speeds that their current Snapdragon chips can handle.
But, what this does do for our mobile devices is increased efficiency and that means increased battery life. Cristiano Amon, executive vice president, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., and co-president, QCT said, “The expansion of our connectivity solutions to include fifth-generation LTE Category10 technology, and the QFE3100, will offer consumers more efficient mobile devices that connect seamlessly to the fastest LTE Advanced networks while consuming lower power. Today’s announcement builds on our established technology leadership in the LTE connectivity space and demonstrates our continued commitment to offering users an outstanding and unparalleled mobile experience.”
Qualcomm is always striving to be the best when it comes to processors and every new series that come out always has more refinements – like their Quick Charge 2.0 on their 800 series that allows up to 6-8 hours of additional service on only a 15-minute charge. We are still waiting for their 64-bit chips to arrive in devices, hopefully very soon in 2015. Now that Android 5.0 Lollipop is 64-bit, we would like to get this show on the road.
