About a week ago, we stumbled upon a report which claimed Sharp is working on a 4K 4096 x 2160 smartphone display. Back in May, head of LG Display also mentioned that the company is working on a 600 and even 700ppi smartphone panels and that those displays are really close to being ready for mass production. Well, it seems like Samsung’s 4K panels will be ready for next August, just in time for the launch of Galaxy Note 5. According to an unnamed tipster, Phone Arena reports that Samsung will start mass production of a 5.9-inch Ultra HD Super AMOLED panels with 700+ppi next August. Keep in mind that is just a tip from one source at this point and there’s no way we can say how legit it is, but it’s something and quite frankly it sounds rather believable.
Samsung also said in its Analyst Days presentation slides last year that UHD 2160 x 3840 AMOLED displays are in the works for 2015. Not only that, but at the Semiconductor and Display Technology Roadmap workshop in January, Samsung’s staff hinted at the arrival of a higher-resolution UHD handset displays. It seems like these displays will sport a diamond pixel arrangement, which is not a standard RGB stripe matrix we’re used to seeing, it’s closed to a PenTile arrangement. I’m not sure how legit is this info, but I am sure that it won’t matter. These are such high resolutions that stuff like that really doesn’t matter.
So, according to the latest reports, 2015 will be the year of 4K displays. Well, at least the second part of the year will. Sharp, LG and Samsung seem to be close to releasing their own UHD smartphone panels. I can’t say I’m too excited about that though, I still don’t see the point in including 2K panels on smartphones, let alone 4K ones. I’m sure that there are many of you out there who would disagree with me and that’s just fine, we’re all entitled to our own opinion of course, besides, I’m not saying I mind a 2K display just that I don’t need it at the moment. I’m perfectly happy with the 1080p panel that I’m using right now, though I have used smartphones with 2K panels as well and I just didn’t notice that much difference. Jump from 720p to 1080p was more noticeable in my humble opinion, but that’s just me of course. Do you own a smartphone with a 2K display up front, or are you still rockin’ something with a 720p or 1080p display (or perhaps lower than that)?
