Samsung keeps churning out their many variations of a smartwatch – and there is no exact launching date as there are with their Galaxy S series or Galaxy Note series – a new smartwatch can pop up anytime they believe they have a new ‘big thing.’ The latest in their line is the new Samsung Gear S smartwatch, and if their opening day sales in their homeland of South Korea is any indication of global wide sales, then it may be their most successful – according to our source, over 10,000 were sold on opening day. It is now available through AT&T, Sprint, and Best Buy’s Samsung Experience stores throughout the U.S, and then T-Mobile and Verizon will soon follow.
What makes the Samsung Gear S so ‘smart’ is that it does not have to be paired to a smartphone – it has its own SIM card slot and features its own 3G connectivity – which means it can make and receive its own phones calls…finally a true smartwatch. It comes to us with a 2-inch AMOLED display with a 360 x 480 resolution and is powered by a 300mAh battery. Its brains is a dual-core processor clocked a 1GHz, backed by 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. The Gear S runs on Samsung’s own Tizen operating system and is not an Android Wear device.
Gear S comes with a barometer, A-GLONASS GPS, Bluetooth 4.1, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, a gyroscope, compass, heart rate monitor, and even ambient and UV light detectors. Samsung claims the user will get up to two days of usage – that may be difficult if you make many phone calls over the Gear S, but until we can test one, we will have to wait and see. The large, curved display will make it easier to read incoming text and emails and to dial phone numbers directly from the Gear S. Each carrier is handling the Gear S a little differently because it is being treated as a device on your plan. Selling price varies – Verizon is offering the Gear S for $399, while AT&T and Best Buy have it for $299, AT&T is also offering it on contract for $199 and on T-Mobile it will set you back about $349.92 or $0/down and $14.58 per month for 24 months.
