Meizu has launched two impressive devices in the last couple of months. First they launched the Meizu MX4 back in September, this handset offered a lot for the price Meizu decided to sell it for. More on the specs later, but this handset was / is priced at 1,799 Yuan ($292) in China, which is extremely affordable for this handset. As if that wasn’t enough, only two and a half months after the unveiling of the MX4, Meizu decided to release the MX4 Pro with a bigger, higher-res display, an extra gig of RAM, a more powerful processor and a fingerprint scanner. Interestingly enough, this device doesn’t cost that much either, only 700 ($114) Yuan more than the MX4, the MX4 Pro is priced at 2,499 Yuan, which is also not bad considering what the device offers.
Meizu MX4 sports a 5.36-inch 1080p (1920 x 1152) display along with 2GB of RAM and 16, 32 or 64GB of built-in storage. MediaTek’s MT6595 octa-core processor is powering on this device along with PowerVR Series 6 GPU. 20.7-megapixel shooter is located at the back of the device along with a dual LED, dual tone flash. On the front of the device, you can find a 5-megapixel snapper which can come in handy for selfies and video calls, if that’s your thing. MX4 comes with Android 4.4.4 KitKat pre-installed with Meizu’s Flyme 4.0 OS on top of it. The device measures 144 x 75.2 x 8.9mm and weighs 147 grams. On the other hand, the Meizu MX4 Pro sports a 5.5-inch Quad HD (2560 x 1536) display, 3GB of RAM and the same storage options as its older brother. Samsung’s Exynos 5430 octa-core CPU is powering on this beast instead of MediaTek’s offering and on the inside you’ll find the same 20.7-megapixel IMX220 sensor from Sony, while there’s an OmniVision-made 5-megapixel sensor on the front side of the device. MX4 Pro also offers LTE and it sports a push-to-activate fingerprint scanner below the display while it measures 150.1 x 77 x 9mm and it weighs 158 grams.
That being said, both of these handsets have the same IMX220 sensors, as I already mentioned. This sensor is manufactured by Sony and if used properly can make a great camera. Both of these handsets have solid cameras, though people are expecting for the MX4 Pro’s camera to be a somewhat better shooter, is that the case? Well, let’s find out. If you take a look down below, you’ll notice a ton of images in pairs, the first image is taken by MX4’s camera, while the second image is the product of MX4 Pro’s camera. In most situations, MX4 Pro’s camera did offer better results, it adjusted the white balance and minimized the noisiness in the images. The MX4 Pro’s camera also sharpened images and allowed more light into the picture, so the images actually turned out better. I say, “in most situations”, because in low-light, Meizu MX4’s camera does a significantly better job, you’ll find those images down below as well. MX4’s camera offers less overly exposed images in low light and in most cases provides a better picture as a result. When it comes to macro shots and color balancing in most conditions, MX4 Pro is definitely the superior shooter.
I was a bit surprised the MX4 did a better job in low-light, but MX4 Pro’s shooter is still superior overall, even though images are hit and miss. In some cases the MX4 took the better picture, even in normal conditions. Anyhow, take a look at the images below and see for yourself.
