A few months ago, the Gionee Elife S5.1 was the world’s thinnest phones. Although Gionee isn’t yet a registered firm in the UK, or for that matter, a lot of other western markets, its phones often end up there thanks to vendors that re-brand Gionee phones and sell them as their own. In fact, Gionee is popular for its OEM services among upcoming brands such as BLU, etc. Earlier today, the UK market got the Elife S5.1 in the form of the Kazam Tornado 348.
If you aren’t aware of the specifications, here’s what it comes with: a 4.8-inch 1280 x 720p HD display, a 1.7GHz octa-core processor (from… you guessed it right, MediaTek), 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. Of course, that’s only half the story — if you do purchase the Gion… er.. Kazam Tornado 348, you’ll do so for the 5.15mm thin frame in which all the aforementioned internals are packed. With style comes compromise, which is why the Tornado 348 gets only a 2050mAh battery and lacks an expandable storage feature. It runs on Android KitKat, and has a camera combo consisting of an 8-megapixel rear and a 2-megapixel front.
As you would expect from a device as thin as this one, it weighs a shade under a 100 grams, at 95.5g. In the UK, not only does the phone get a new name but also a sexy sort of an ad, which you can take a look at after the end of the article. Buyers in the UK can get the phone via the Kazam official website which offers the phone for 249 GBP, equivalent to about $388. This of course looks like an expensive device on paper, but prospective buyers will know what they’re paying the premium for — a freakishly thin phone. Gionee has already launched the phone in China, India and some other markets where it has gotten decent reviews.
Phones have been getting thinner each year, and the Elife S5.1 was trumped by the OPPO R5 and more recently, the Vivo X5 Max as the thinnest phone in the world. Are you planning to buy one of these thin phones? Either way, let us know what you think.
