If you spend any time on Google+ then you will have at some point been begged for an ‘invite’. By far, the most annoying invite request was (and still is) OnePlus One invites. That said, what is quickly coming up as equally as annoying on Google+ is Inbox invites. The new “Guys that brought you Gmail” app, ‘Inbox by Gmail‘ was released on a trial basis and by invite only. With this being a new email client, and one by Google needless to say it proved quite popular. However, there were some concerns that with the arrival of Inbox that Gmail might be on its way out. Soon after, reports started coming through that this was less likely to be a Gmail replacement but somehow expected to work alongside Gmail. This did not quite make sense to people (including me) but this is what everyone was hearing. Well, there is a little bit more clarification now on the future of Inbox…and by association Gmail.
This morning the Google guys held one of their now-common AMA (Ask Me Anything) Q&A talk on reddit. To cut straight to the chase, in terms of Inbox and Gmail, the guys said that the short term plan is certainly not to replace Gmail With Inbox. Interestingly though, in their longer vision, maybe. Although they “love” Gmail, the guys said that they would hope with the features expected to come to Inbox, users might want to migrate to Inbox. So take what you want from that. The guys were also asked about Gapps support inside Inbox. To this, the guys replied that this is the plan and they were working on it, although it does take some time.
Other notable questions which were answered included the guys stating they are working on an ‘Undo Send’ button, to, well, undo send those emails you did not mean to send. They also advised that they are “actively looking into” a unified inbox to support multiple accounts. Although, also alluded that cross-platform compatible might be an issue for this feature to work. There was also a ton of other questions asked and answers give, but these seemed to be the big points to note.
