Lenovo S580 Goes Official In India With A 5" Display And A Snapdragon 200 SoC

Another day, another Chinese OEM launching a phone in India. It’s been like that for quite a while now, and the trend continues with the launch of the all new Lenovo S580 smartphone in the country. Another budget-friendly device, the S580 will sell for 8,999 INR in the country, roughly an equivalent of US$145. A ton of other phones have launched in India at the concerned price point, it’s going to take Lenovo some aggressive marketing to make the S580 a success. Nonetheless, lets take a look at the specifications of the smartphone.

It’ll come with a 5-inch 1280 x 720 pixel display, and will be powered by a quad-core processor. Lenovo have opted to go the Snapdragon route in this smartphone’s case, which might catch the fancy of some buyers who’ve been riddled with a lot of MediaTek phones in the past. It’s the Snapdragon 200, with a clock frequency of 1.2GHz per core, through the four that it has. Along with that, the S580 will have 1GB of RAM, 8GB of on-board storage and a camera department consisting of an 8-megapixel rear and a 2-megapixel front-facing shooter.

“Lenovo has been in the forefront of product innovation offering consumers a range of superior value for money smartphones. The new range of S series smartphones are stylish and feature rich suiting the users’ aspirations. The S580 is an amalgamation of stylish design, blazing fast processing speeds, and integrated Lenovo proprietary apps making it a unanimous choice for users looking at smartphones at a sub 10k price category,” said Sudhin Mathur, Director of phones, Lenovo India.

What’s a shame is the fact that it’ll only come with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out of the box. The phone is advertised to be upgradeable to Android 4.4 KitKat, but there’s no word on Lollipop or even the compatibility yet. To appeal to a wide range of users, the phone will support dual SIM, while offering support for 3G networks as well. A rather small 2150mAh battery will provide juice to the internals, so a working day is perhaps the most you will be able to get out of the 2150mAh battery, especially if you’re planning to use it with two SIMs at a time.
