CyanogenMod is quite probably the most popular Android ROM out there. For a reason, CyanogenMod offers extreme levels of customization and great performance, no to mention quick updates. When Cyanogen and OnePlus announced the CyanogenMod-powered OnePlus One handset back in April, many people were ready to throw the cash at these companies in order to get their hands on a copy of that device. The main reason are the beastly specs OnePlus included in that device and the extremely low price point for the device. OnePlus also introduced an invite system, so not everyone could get the device, but that’s not important at the moment, I could write about that all day. The partnership between OnePlus and Cyanogen has hit a few bumps lately and those two companies have been hitting each other back and forth over the media. OnePlus Two quite probably won’t come with CyanogenMod pre-installed, not only because of the relationship between the two companies, but because of the fact Cyanogen recently signed an agreement with an Indian smartphone manufacturer Micromax.
Having this new partnership in mind, we were waiting for some news regarding the upcoming Micromax devices powered by CyanogenMod, and that has finally happened. This handset will be YU-branded, which might be a bit confusing. YU is a new, Micromax-owned, company which was announced last month. This company has sent out invites for their event on December 18th where the company is expected to announce the CyanogenMod-powered YU phone, though the company doesn’t mention anything about the phone launch though. The company’s co-founder, Rahul Sharma, did recently tell 91mobiles that the first YU phone will be packing some really high-end hardware. Considering that Cyanogen already unveiled the Themes app for YU smartphones, my guess is that we’ll the CM-powered phone launched on December 18th. This sounds really exciting, hopefully this phone will carry a rather affordable price tag much like the OnePlus One, but without the invite system OnePlus is still clinging to.
