Samsung Galaxy A series of devices is Samsung’s premium built mid-range line of devices primarily aimed at Asian market. There are 3 devices announced as part of this series thus far, Galaxy A3, A5 and A7. Two out of three just launched in Taiwan, Galaxy A3 and A5. Both of these handsets will be available for purchase in Taiwan starting this month. Galaxy A3 will be priced at $287, while the more expensive variant, Galaxy A5, will cost you $380. It remains to be seen how well will these device sell, Samsung definitely has the brand awareness needed to sell them, but brands like Xiaomi and Meizu are selling devices like crazy in Asia and considering the pricing of both A3 and A5, Samsung’s sales could suffer. It will definitely be interesting to see the results in a couple of months.
Samsung Galaxy A3 features a 4.5-inch qHD (960 x 540) Super AMOLED display along with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage (expandable via MicroSD card up to 64GB). This handset is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 410 SoC, a 64-bit quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz which comes with an Adreno 306 GPU for graphics processing. 8-megapixel camera is located on the back of this device, while you can find a 5-megapixel shooter on the front side of this device. 1900mAh battery ships with the device, as well as Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Samsung’s own UI on top of it.
The Galaxy A5 is a somewhat more powerful and more expensive choice. This handset ships with a 5-inch 720p (1280 x 720) Super AMOLED display, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of in-built storage, which you can also expand via MicroSD card up to 64GB. Galaxy A5 is also powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 410 chip and also has a 5-megapixel shooter on the front. This handset has a bigger sensor on the back though, 13-megapixel camera, compared to the 8-megapixel sensor on the Galaxy A3. 2300mAh battery ships with this handset along with Android 4.4.4 KitKat and, of course, Samsung’s very own UI on top of it.
I’m really not sure how will sales go for these handsets considering this is Asian market we’re talking about. Samsung’s sales took a drop of about 50% in China lately and I’m really not sure if Galaxy A3 and A5 can change things around in Asia, we’ll see.
