Samsung's Galaxy J1 is To be First in New Line of Budget Android Smartphones

Samsung might have promised to release less phones throughout 2015, that certainly doesn’t mean that they’ll be shrinking their lineup dramatically. Instead, it looks like Samsung is to streamline things and cut down a little bit. New lines like the Galaxy A and Galaxy E lines have already been rumored about and in the case of the Galaxy A line devices have been officially announced. It looks like Samsung is to welcome one more member of the Alphabet to the team, with the Galaxy J line. What appears to be a new line of budget devices SamMobile have the scoop on the Galaxy J1 specifications.

The Galaxy J1 (SM-J100) appears to be a 4.8-inch 800 x 480 device that features a 64-bit Quad-Core Marvell PXA1908 CPU clocked at 1.2GHz with 1GB of RAM. Already, things aren’t that exciting, but these budget devices can be important money spinners for Samsung in emerging markets like India and throughout Asia. Elsewhere there’s a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, 4GB of expandable storage and a 1,850 mAh battery. SamMobile’s source even has the measurements, which are said to be 129 — 68 — 8.9mm and that it’ll weigh 123g.

Aside from cold-hard figures on paper, what do we know about the Galaxy J1? Well, not much more than that, but this is an interesting move from Samsung. It appears as though Samsung will change things in 2015, and instead of using monikers like “Galaxy Core” and “Galaxy Avant” the giant will move towards introducing lines of devices with letters similar to the Galaxy S line. Whether or not this means that they’ll be less confusion among consumers when it comes to choosing a Samsung smartphone is something we’ll have to wait and see, but a change lie this could be for the better. With so many devices that all seem the same on paper – and in some cases in person – it’ll be nice to see Samsung draw a line in the sand and let users know which is which.
