With Android 5.0 Lollipop being out for a couple of months now, it’s no surprise that it’s finally rolling out to more and more devices. Motorola managed to beat even Google to the punch with their Moto X (2014) update to Lollipop and now Samsung appears to be catching up. With numerous leaks of Lollipop for the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4, it seems like a full rollout isn’t too far away. Now, it looks like both the Galaxy Note 4 and the Note Edge might be upgraded to Android 5.0.1 directly.
SamMobile have obtained new firmware leaks for both devices, that list Android 5.0.1 in their version numbers, with firmware builds of N910FXXU for the Galaxy Note 4, and N915SKS for the Galaxy Note Edge. Other than a very tiny version bump and some bug fixes, this isn’t going to be much of a change from Android 5.0 Lollipop, but it would be nice to see Samsung’s Galaxy Note line get the very latest version of Android as it becomes available. From what we’ve seen of the leaked builds of Android Lollipop, it appears that Samsung has adopted some key features from Google’s Android, but as always TouchWiz prevails. There’s very little evidence of Material Design creeping into the core apps on the device, for instance. However, we can’t imagine users would like it if their Samsung smartphone changed practically overnight.
No matter what, I’m sure there are a lot of Galaxy Note users out there that are waiting for their update. Hopefully, those on US carriers won’t have to wait too much longer than our European friends and that Samsung can deliver a smooth update. Will the update roll out before the end of the year? I doubt it, but it would be a nice Christmas gift for a lot of users. Even so, an update in January would be a decent turnaround, especially for two devices that only launched this Fall.
