Over the past year or so, Chromebooks have been slowly getting more and more powerful. We saw Acer put in an Intel Core i3 processor into their 11.6-inch C720 late last year. And now we’ve got some more Broadwell powered Chromebooks coming next month. These are their fifth generation processors, and it looks like the Acer Chromebook 15 which was announced yesterday will be one of the first. Broadwell chips are said to be even more powerful and efficient than their predecessors, which makes sense. Which should also mean that PC makers can make Chromebooks with even longer battery life, a bit cheaper. Which is also a great thing. Additionally, the Broadwell chips are the same price as the Haswell chips, better battery life for the same price. I think we can all dig that.
It’s true, Chromebooks don’t really need a whole lot of power. Essentially they are just a laptop that runs on Google Chrome. So they don’t need as much power as say a Windows Laptop or even a Macbook. Which is why we can get Chromebooks for so cheap. In fact, Acer’s 11.6-inch models start at about $199 brand new. And now you’ve got a ton of other PC makers coming out with cheaper and cheaper Chromebooks with decent hardware as well. The Chromebook scene has really picked up lately, and it’s definitely nice to see.
Outside of Chromebooks, Intel is expecting to power more Chrome boxes and Chromebases this year. We’ve already seen a number of these from LG, HP, Acer, and ASUS, and we’re likely to see even more in 2015. Definitely an exciting time for Chrome OS. How many of you are excited to see what kind of Chromebooks we get this year from Acer, ASUS, HP, Samsung, and others? Let us know in the comments below.
