Selfies have become all the rage over the last year, and despite many negative opinions of the trend it seems that it’s here to stay. Coupled with selfies are the first person style cameras that make you feel like you’re part of the action when you watch the video. GoPro is most certainly the most well-known name in this sector of the market, and it’s made a name for itself by creating rugged, high-quality cameras that can do a whole lot. But what if you’re looking for something a little cheaper and smaller to get the job done? That’s where Polaroid comes in with its Cube HD Action Camera, a little rubberized cube that fits in the palm of your hand and records video at 720p or 1080p and retails for $99.
Polaroid’s cube is a really cool little gadget that I got to play with at CES 2015 and one that impressed me with its size and functionality. Being rubberized means it’s a bit tougher than if it were plastic since you won’t have to worry about cracking or breaking if it falls, the unit will just bounce. There’s a small switch on the back that toggles between 720p and 1080p, with a microSD card slot above that supports up to 32GB card sizes, and a micro USB port below for standard charging cables. The button on top toggles recording, and the camera itself can record for up to 90 minutes at a time between recharges. It’s got a 124-degree super wide-angle lens that captures everything in its field of view, meaning no tunnel vision when taking videos. The base is magnetic too, which means you can stick it on any metal surface and hit go.
There’s also a ton of accessories that help you catch all the action no matter what conditions you take it in. While the device itself isn’t waterproof it is splashproof, meaning rain won’t damage the device in normal conditions. If you need it to be waterproof Polaroid sells a case that serves just this purpose and can give you the option to do even crazier stuff with the little camera. There’s also the bumper case that includes a little metal clip to keep it safe on your belt loop, backpack or somewhere else. In addition to those Polaroid sells all sorts of mounts from bicycle handlebar mounts to strap mounts so you can tie it on something (or attach it to your dog’s collar).
