It’s CES 2015, and that means that we’re going to hear from some of the biggest names in the industry over the next couple of days and CES wouldn’t be complete without a showing from Qualcomm. The company behind the vast majority of mobile processors inside Android smartphones and tablets is using 2015’s CES to show off the power and versatility of the new Snapdragon 810, which will be hitting devices later this year. While Qualcomm doesn’t have quite the presence at this year’s CES as they have done in previous years, they’re certainly not short of things to say.
They’ve released a number of videos showing off the Snapdragon 810’s versatility as well as its processing power. For those that have forgotten, the Snapdragon 810 is an octa-core, 64-bit CPU that’s based on newer ARM Core designs. The 8 CPU cores are aligned in a pair of four Cortex-A53 and Cortex-A57 CPU cores, with the former taking care of things while looking after battery life and the latter looking to get the job done as quickly as possible. Where needed though, all 8 CPU cores can work together. Clock speeds will reach around 2.0 Ghz as seen in the newly announced LG G Flex 2. Support for LP-DDR4 RAM is here and there’s a new Adreno 430 GPU onboard as well as faster LTE support, too.
The big performance bump here seems to the be the ability to flawlessly handle 4K video, which could be a sign that a 4K tablet could launch before the end of 2015, but with so little content available this all seems like putting the cart before the horse. Devices with the Snapdragon 810 will be able to record higher-quality video faster than before and take pictures up to 55-megapixel in resolution.
Qualcomm has released the following demos to show people just how versatile and powerful this year’s smartphones will be thanks to the Snapdragon 810. The demos cover a number of things from the ability to wirelessly dock your smartphone or tablet and use it with an external display to seamless call transfers no matter whether you’re moving from WiFi to 4G or back again. An interesting demo is the Fluence Pro video, which shows off selective audio recording when recording a video. This allows you to tune what the microphones on your device pick up and ultimately how your recording sounds at the end of filming. Take a look at the demos below and let us know what you’re most excited about from the Snapdragon 810.
