Sony Unveils Stainless Steel Smartwatch 3 And Announces Modular Attachment For Third Party Watch Bands

Earlier this morning we reported that Sony would be bringing their own metal smartwatch to market, not a new device but rather a metal version of the Sony Smartwatch 3 complete with a stainless steel band. Some have felt that the Smartwatch 3 looked a little too much like an active fitness tracker, but with the stainless steel offering those who wanted a more traditional looking watch with the added capabilities that the Smartwatch 3 offered like the built-in GPS sensor(the only Android Wear watch to include this)now have that capability.

Sony showed this off at their CES 2015 live stream press event, but we had already learned about the coming of Sony’s metal SW3 this morning. The new bit of information comes in the form of a new modular attachment that Sony will be offering for the Smartwatch 3 that allows the wearer to strap on any 24mm band they wish to complete a more personalized look. Whether or not you will literally be able to use virtually any watch band in existence is undetermined, and we imagine it’ll depend on how thick the band might be. Nevertheless including an attachment for exiting Smartwatch 3 owners as well as the people who purchase the stainless steel model, so that they might be able to affix a band they’re more in love with is pretty awesome.

The beauty of Sony’s smartwatch 3 is that the watch face unit itself can be popped out of whatever band you have it in, so you could buy the stainless steel model, pop it out of the stainless steel band and strap on some nice looking leather. Or, you could keep int in completely stainless steel, your choice. While I personally was fond of the original smartwatch 3 design, it’s nice to see Sony coming out with an offering for anyone who wanted something that looked a little more classic. If you like the idea of the built-in GPS sensor but wanted something that offered metal and leather, it seems Sony now has an answer for you with this new set of SW3 options. Both the Stainless Steel Smartwatch 3 and the modular band attachment are to launch sometime next month, so keep your eyes open if these interest you.
