At CES earlier this month, Sony announced a new Walkman. It’s the NW-ZX2, and it has a pretty hefty price tag. We were told at CES that it’d cost around $1,000. Well Pre-orders are going live tomorrow for about $1,280. That’s pretty insane for a walkman, especially one that I don’t think is going to sell many. In the day and age of smartphones, I think the walkman and iPod are dead. This is mostly for audiophiles, and I’m sure a few will buy them. Heck they’ll spend that much just on headphones, nevermind a walkman that brings you high-quality music in your library. It will transcode your music to a higher quality, which audiophiles will love.
The device does have 128GB of storage, so there’s plenty of storage there for all of your music. Additionally there is a microSD card slot on board. It’s also running on Android 4.2, yes that’s Jelly Bean and a little over 2 years old now. Sony says that’s the most recent “Stable” version of Android. Which is kinda true, as Lollipop has it’s issues, and KitKat had some before that.
For those that order their Walkman tomorrow, you can also bundle headphones, headphone amplifiers and speakers, and get even deeper discounts. But after spending over $1,280 on their walkman, I’m not sure many people would buy speakers, or headphones or amps.
We went hands on with the new Sony Walkman ZX2 at CES earlier this month in Las Vegas, it’s a nice device, but we’re not sold on the price tag just yet. That might change once we get a review unit in and actually use it, instead of just holding it, taking a look at it, etc., at CES. How many of our readers out there are looking forward to pre-ordering their Sony Walkman ZX2 tomorrow when it goes on sale? Let us know in the comments down below.
