WhatsApp had a couple of announcements today. The first being WhatsApp for the web. And now we’ve got WhatSIM. It’s basically a SIM card that brings you access to WhatsApp anywhere in the world. Pretty neat, right? All you have to pay is an upfront fee of €10. Other than that, it’s completely free. Meaning no monthly charge at all. The deal with WhatSIM is basically to be able to contact people when you’re out of the country without having to pay those outrageous roaming fees. It’s pretty crazy that it’s free too. However, WhatsApp doesn’t use much data anyways, it probably uses the least out of all the messaging alternatives out there.
“Anywhere in the world it connects to the provider with the best coverage and signal right where you are. If you change your position, it automatically searches for a new provider. If a better one is available, it connects by itself without you even noticing it.
Everyone now uses WhatsApp, even when traveling. But you need a data or Wi-Fi connection to chat for free. The most common problem is that the roaming data connection is usually expensive and Wi-Fi is not available everywhere and often it is not even free.
WhatSim allows you to chat with WhatsApp whenever you want.”
It’s a really interesting concept. And it’ll be really interesting to see if it actually does take off. I know when I go out of the country, I need more than just WhatsApp, so it wouldn’t work for me going to Mobile World Congress or IFA this year. But for others that travel constantly, it might be a pretty decent service. Considering it is free. How many of you are looking to check out WhatSIM?
