Android How-To: Install Google Now Launcher on Huawei Honor 6 or 6 Plus

Some Manufacturers like to custom create the experience you’re going to have with their smartphone and don’t want to make it easy for you to alter that experience in any way.  Many Chinese manufacturers tend to do this with their Android skins and while it helps create a simple experience that the user isn’t likely to mess up, it makes it difficult for those who just want to try out something new or customize their phone in a certain way.  Changing the launcher on certain Android 4.4 KitKat powered devices, like either the Huawei Honor 6 or Honor 6 Plus can be a frustrating experience that could leave you throwing your hands in the air (and hopefully not your phones).  We’re here to make sure that doesn’t happen, so if you’re trying to get the Google Now Launcher to work on your Huawei Honor 6 or Honor 6 Plus we’ve got just the thing for you in this tutorial.

Head on over to the Google Play Store and download the Google Search app.  Once this is installed go ahead and open the app and set up Google Now by clicking through the prompts.  After this head back to the Play Store and download Google Now Launcher but do not open the app just yet, it won’t do anything at this point.  Reboot your phone to let the installation take effect, as for whatever reason the list of available home launchers doesn’t like to show all options until after a reboot on Huawei’s EMUI.  Once the phone is back and running head on over to the system settings view by clicking Settings on your home screen or pulling down the notification bar, swiping over to toggles and clicking on the settings gear icon.

Inside of settings you’ll find a section called Manage Apps, and in here you’ll want to click the “Default app settings” button at the bottom.  Click on Launcher at the top and select the “Google App” from the list.  Here’s where you can change to any other launcher you’d like, or of course select the default apps to use for the call, messaging, camera, gallery, music and email functions of the phone.  Now when you hit home you’ll be taken to the Google Now Launcher, and Google Now will be just a swipe or “OK Google” away at a moments notice!
