Are you the type of person that has to purchase your new smartphone the very day it is released or are you the type that prefers to wait a couple of months until all the reviews are done and the ‘verdict’ is in? Well, a recent study by Idealo shows that consumers that can wait at least 6 months could save up to 28-percent on the purchase of their Samsung Galaxy S6. This should come as no surprise – the Galaxy S2 and S3 held their prices the most, although, by that sixth month, even they were down about 24-percent and 23-percent respectively. The Galaxy S5 had the sharpest decline in months 3 to 5 as Samsung dropped prices to push up sales. Idealo claims that they can accurately predict the Galaxy S6’s fall – they are showing a quick drop of 16-percent in the first two months…one month of leveling out…and then a quick drop during months 3 to 5 and then a slight rise to 28-percent at the end of 6 months.
While we know that Samsung will announce the new Galaxy S6 at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona the first of March, we still do not have a precise release date nor even the selling price, other than it would be expensive – especially the Galaxy S6 Edge. Smartphone sites are suggesting starting prices in Europe at US$875 for the 32GB model, and based on past performance of the Galaxy S series is how they arrive at their predictions.
Samsung is hoping that this steep drop with not occur with their new and improved Galaxy S6. The sales of the Galaxy S5 were poor when compared to the Galaxy S4 sales the previous year. Samsung may have to lower their price in order to kickstart sales, but as history shows, if you can hold off buying on the first day, you are bound to save money.
