It was just about a month ago we reported that WIND Mobile subscribers who were updating their Motorola Moto X (2014) via Over-the-Air (OTA) to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop were bricking their devices. There were reports all day like this poor guy: “I got home, downloaded, and ran the update. Now my phone is stuck boot looping. I’m currently trying to get the phone to wipe, but recovery mode is being a pain in the a$$. When I get to recovery mode, and select “recovery”, I get the android with the words “no command”. After that I can’t get the phone to do anything.” He followed up with: “Finally got the phone to turn off completely. I had to go to recovery mode, then select shut down. I still can’t get the phone to recognise the SIM card or give me WiFi. I’m stuck.”
WIND Mobile originally moved the problem to their Level 2 Support, and owners were told to contact their warranty center, as they were instructed not to replace the devices. Soon afterwards, Motorola Canada was working with WIND Mobile to find a solution. Fortunately, Motorola made things right and issued the following statement: “Yesterday we began testing Android 5.0 Lollipop by pushing out a beta upgrade to a small number of WIND Moto X (2nd Gen.) users in Canada. Some of those users are reporting issues with the test upgrade and we are actively looking into the cause. We’re asking the owners that have been impacted to return their affected Moto X to a WIND store for a replacement. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this causes.”
WIND Mobile and Motorola are sending out their second attempt at the Lollipop update – just a small number are receiving the update just to make sure there are no problems. Some are even hesitant to go through with the update, and no one could blame them, but one Reddit user wrote that he received the OTA upgrade and “everything’s working great.” Motorola never did say what the problem was, but it looks like this time it’s a winner. The one good thing that comes from these tragedies is when they re-release the fix, you can be fairly sure it will be right this time around – Motorola Canada and WIND Mobile did not want to face phones bricking again.
