It seems like Acer is keen to kickstart things in Chrome OS land right about now, with the introduction of a new 4K capable Chromebox yesterday and a pre-order page for the first 15.6-inch Chromebook on Amazon UK today. The 15.6-inch Chromebook CB5 was announced earlier this year and in typical fashion for Acer, there are a number of different models in the line. Sadly, as is also typical for Acer, it doesn’t look like the more advanced models are heading to the UK, at least not yet, anyway.
OMGChrome have spotted the product listing for the 15.6-inch Chromebook CB5 over on Amazon UK and sadly, this isn’t the 1080p model many of you were hoping for. Still, with a £249 price tag, we can’t expect all that much now, can we? This version of the Chromebook CB5 is listed with an Intel Celeron 3205U CPU at 1.5 Ghz with 2GB of RAM, a 16GB SSD and of course, a 1366 x 768 display. You do of course get dual-band 802.11ac WiFi and a built-in webcam, which are often fairly decent.
It’s sad to not see any of the other versions listed here, and if Acer’s track record with Chromebooks is anything to go by, it’s unlikely that we’ll see the 4GB or 1080p models launch in the UK at all. This does however, let us know when these Chromebooks should be launching; around May. Amazon has a tentative shipping date of May 20th for the one listed on the site, and we’d imagine that Amazon is pretty clued up on release dates of upcoming products and such. For £249, this isn’t too bad a deal, especially if all you’re looking for is a larger display and nothing else. However, as an owner of the HP Chromebook 14 with 4GB of RAM and a similar CPU, I’d have liked to see more RAM available here. Nevertheless, this is the only 15.6-inch Chromebook listed for pre-order or otherwise in the UK and it’s good to see one more choice like this for Chrome OS fans across the pond.
