Android TV is slowly making its way into more and more devices and with the inclusion of the platform already confirmed by a number of TV manufacturers, this trend is likely to continue throughout 2015 and beyond. To add to the ever growing list, French internet provider, Free, has today launched their first foray into the Android TV world in the form of the ‘Freebox mini 4K’. As the name suggests this is, as well as being an Android TV box is also a 4K streaming device. Interestingly, the press release (source link below) does state that this is the first ultra HD streaming device (4K) which although is true in terms of expected availability, it was not the first to be announced thanks to last week’s announcement by Nvidia of their 4K Nvidia Shield unit.
That said, it is another Android TV device and it is arriving. In terms of when, the press statement states that the device will begin shipping to their customers as early as this month. So for those interesting you will not have to wait too long. In terms of pricing, it looks like the system will be on a rolling subscription price which will consist of a flat fee of €29.99 per month.
In terms of what is on offer, besides the Android TV functionality and 4K streaming, the Freebox mini 4K will come equipped with a Broadcom (BCM7252) dual-core processor (clocking at 1.5GHz), it will also be equipped with WiFi, Bluetooth, an SD Card slot and three USB slots. According to the details, the unit will come as a three part system, the first will be the Android TV Player, the second unit will be a server box which will offer connection to their internet and last up is the remote control.
