The all new HTC One M9 is HTC’s upcoming flagship device and the successor to the HTC One M7 from last year. HTC unveiled their new handset at Mobile World Congress 2015 which started on Monday and ended Wednesday this week, and while some people may not be fond of the design or that HTC decided to stick closely to the same style as the past two flagships, many users will appreciate that HTC decided to keep things simpler without changing much and merely improving on specific points instead of overhauling everything. HTC even explained this week why they chose to keep the design of the M9 as close to the last two flagships as possible, but some may have been wondering why they chose a similar sounding name.
It shouldn’t be too hard to figure out, as it’s simply HTC’s succession of flagships. Last year’s was the One M8, the year before that was the One M7, so naturally One M9 would be the next one in the list. As it turns out, the HTC One M9 is apparently HTC’s 9th actual flagship device since they started embarking on their own brand too, so it’s not just the succession of numbers from the One M7 forward, it’s also HTC’s 9th flagship altogether starting from the HTC Touch. This is all according to Jeff Gordon(HTC’s Senior Global Communications Manager)who mentioned on Twitter that after looking back at HTC’s device history, he noticed this little detail about why HTC has named the One M7, One M8, and One M9 the way they have.
The full list of devices starts off with the HTC Touch, HTC’s first flagship in this list, and continues on with the HTC Dream(or MyTouch to T-Mobile users), the HTC Hero, the HTC Evo 4G, the HTC Sensation, the HTC One X, and finally the most recent, the HTC One M7 and the One M8, ending with this year’s HTC One M9. Gordon also mentions that initially the One M7, M8, and M9 devices were all supposed to be codenames internally, but they became what HTC saw as the best representations of what HTC was offering with those devices, so they kept them as official names.
