This past Sunday at MWC, Samsung unveiled two new smartphones – their annual flagship, the Galaxy S6, along with a variation called the Galaxy S6 Edge – but to their surprise, although they should not have been, the Galaxy S6 Edge stole the show. It was smooth and sleek looking, and more than that, it had a great ‘balance’ about its look. With both sides of the device curving down, it really beckons to be held and had that subtle ‘wow’ factor and made it just different enough that it was a real departure from the Galaxy S5 – a device that Samsung was trying to distance itself from.
The curved edge is not Samsung’s first venture into that rodeo – just months earlier they had introduced the new Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note Edge…with just the right side of the display curved downward. It was both praised as innovative and ridiculed as a gimmick, but there was no denying it was exciting, different and added to the looks of the device. The Galaxy S6 Edge with curves on both sides really balances out the look of the device and praises at MWC, such as “premium look and feel” were being tossed around. All of this positive response to the dual edge prompted Roh Tae-moon, executive vice president of Samsung’s product strategy team to say, “There is a possibility that Samsung will introduce the curved display for the Galaxy Note lineup.”
Samsung’s mobile chief Shin Jong-kyun also hint that may be the case and said, “We will make a strong push for the S6 Edge. It will outpace its predecessor (the Galaxy Note Edge) in terms of sales. The edge display technology is still in its infancy, but Samsung will further promote it by sharing the SDKs (software development kit) and APIs (application programming interface) for developers to come up with a range of more practical applications.”
The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge was not the hit that Samsung was hoping to have, but it was possibly just the shock factor and customers not sure how practical it was, not to mention the high price tag. However, by putting the ‘edge’ on both sides, that symmetry was restored and it really stole the show from the ‘regular’ edged Galaxy S6 – but pricing will be a huge issue on how many they can sell. It certainly gives Samsung the perfect weapon to battle Apple after less than stellar sales of the Galaxy S5 last year.
From the positive feedback and from the Samsung executive’s remarks, you can be sure that the Galaxy Note Edge will arrive once again this fall, and most likely with two curved edges instead of one.
